The thing about it is that the word "reform" doesn't belong in this bill. It's got nothing to do with reform. It's just giving the government an in road to the mainstream healthcare market, which will put them in a position to scuttle the entire health insurance industry ultimately reducing it to a single-payer system. It is a complete falacy that this is to introduce competition to the market. There are currently about 1300 health insurance companies. That is plenty of competition.

If you want reform, you have to address the real cost problems, which are all areas where the Democrats look for support:

Tort reform: make the loser pay, and place caps on damage awards. The problem is that the lawyers donate heavily and support the Democrats, and in particular, Obama, since he's one of them! A huge portion of health care costs are due to the insurance premiums that healthcare providers needs to pay to be in business because of all the malpractice suits.

Illegal immigration: aside from actual life and death emergency care, make people have to show legal status before giving them health care. Too much of the costs are due to the fact that doctors and hospitals are required to treat anyone who walks in the door, regardless of ability to pay. When you throw illegal immigrants into this mix, we're giving free healthcare to people who should not be here in the first place.

Severe penalties for people who have no health insurance, but keep going to the doctor and hospital and not paying. I'd be in favor of a sort of blacklist of repeat offenders. Someone who has too many unpaid healthcare bills should not be allowed to get anything short of real emergency care unless they pay up front.

Another thing to consider is that there is going to be absolutely no way this will not cause massive debt, for many reasons.
Think about this: they want to pay for it in part by taxing benefits paid by employers. This will cause many employers to drop the health insurance benefits, because of the increased cost, so the estimate of revenue from this is exaggerated.

The health insurance companies all pay billions in taxes. When the goverment puts these companies out, all that revenue will drop out of the system. Also, the unemployment rate increases due to these companies closing down will lead to further individual income tax revenue losses. All of these things will only increase the burden on the government "insurance company", increasing the cost of it, while it is seeing a decrease in revenue. Anyone with basic math skills can figure out that increasing liabilities with decreasing revenue spells bankruptsy. Medicare and Medicaid are already financial disasters. Why there is anyone who thinks the government should be allowed further into the industry continues to baffle me.
